To be or not to be … certified ?

Well I am sure there isn’t Yes or No answer to this question but for sure there are some certifications for which No became my answer !

To brief shortly: because in the last 10 years I did mostly Java , last year I took the Sun’s Certified Programmer (so called SCJP).

When Oracle bought  Sun I was among those who said that this can be beneficent for the Java ecosystem.Well I still want to believe that but I start to have my second thoughts !

Why ?

This year I planned to take SCEA (Sun Certified Enterprise Architect) for various reasons. One of them is that one of the recruiters that I know told me that most of the cv’s are searched for keywords and some of them are “certification”,”certified” etc. and the projects on which you worked on are analyzed just on let’s say second round cv’s. It is disputable if this is a good method or no.

So started to review materials , requirements BUT surprise !!!

Oracle changed the procedure for this certification, so from now on in order to be able to take those 3 exams needed to pass, you need to attend an instructor lead course provided by them.

So: 3 exams apx. 700 euro + instructor led course apx. 2500 euro ==> more then 3000 euro (cause instructor led courses varies from 2200 to 3000)

One of the required instructor led courses is :Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 , even if you are already a SCJP (Java Certified Programmer)

For me this  demonstrates that Oracle does not put value on it’s inherited certifications and is all about the money beacuse  is absurd to ask a SCJP to follow Fundamentals of Java as a prerequisite if you really appreciate SCJP (nowdays Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer) and also the price for me is prohibitive.
